Archive (pre-2021)

I returned to painting in 2018 after gap of perhaps 25 years; my subject drew upon the ‘bone pile’ of my inner mindscape, my inscape. Painting was visual walking; in the company of an eclectic band of elders that included mythographers, authors, performers, musicians, artists, photographers, pyschogeographers, filmmakers and poets.

The resulting paintings nodded to raggle-taggle boats afloat on the contour canal, tang of diesel; hint at deep-diving into old maps with memories of skinny dips, pinewoods & enamel mugs; or celebrate the marriage of White Peak to Cherwell, cave&dale to ironstone&clay. My very own Dreamtime.

There’s always an aspiration that the paintings, rather than being hidden in the dead leaves of memories, might take flight, grow fur, show teeth & claw, speak back, animist and a little Pagan… new born and yet as old as the hills. It’s an aspiration perhaps never quite achieved.
